The Story Behind WA-WA Kenya
A deeply personal story- a story of pain, resilience, and the determination to create change, founded WA-WA Kenya. Growing up near Kenya’s fishing communities, Cavin Odera witnessed the harsh reality many women faced in order to survive. Among the most painful experiences was watching his own mother struggle within a system where women were often forced into “sex for fish” arrangements just to provide food and income for their families. The injustice of seeing dignity traded for survival left a permanent mark on him.

As a young boy, Cavin carried the pain of seeing hardworking women exploited simply because they lacked economic power and opportunity. He knew that no woman should ever have to choose between feeding her children and protecting her dignity.
That experience became the foundation of WA-WA Kenya. An organization created to empower women, support vulnerable communities, and fight against exploitation through education, economic empowerment, and advocacy. Cavin’s vision is to build communities where women and young people can thrive independently, free from abuse, poverty, and discrimination.
Today, WA-WA Kenya stands as more than an organization. It is a movement born from lived experience, driven by compassion, and committed to restoring hope, dignity, and opportunity for future generations.
