🌀 Mastering the Foundations: Hairdressing Class Introduces Blow-Dry Techniques

This week at WA-WA Kenya, our hairdressing trainees are embarking on an essential new module: hair straightening through professional blow-dry techniques. Under the guidance of our experienced trainers, women are learning the anatomy of the blow-dryer, from nozzle attachments and heat settings to concentrators and diffusers, while practicing proper sectioning, tension control, and scalp protection.
For many, this is their first introduction to professional styling tools. The hands-on practice builds not only technical competence but also the confidence needed to offer salon-quality services to future clients.
Beyond the Technique: A Path to Independence
In the fishing communities of Homa Bay, women have long faced impossible choices between survival and safety. The sex-for-fish practice has trapped generations in cycles of exploitation. Skills training like this hairdressing program offers a radical alternative: the ability to earn a dignified income through craft, care, and professionalism.

Every blow-dry mastered represents:
✅ Steps toward economic independence
✅ A safer livelihood away from the lake
✅ Futures built on skill, not survival
