🪢 Perfecting the Craft: Hairdressing Trainees Master Braiding Techniques

Today at WA-WA Kenya, our hairdressing cohort continues its journey toward professional excellence. Trainees are dedicating their practice sessions to braiding techniques, working diligently on mannequin heads to perfect their craft before transitioning to live models.
What They’re Learning:
Under the guidance of experienced trainers, women are mastering:
· ✅ Sectioning & Tension Control – Creating clean, uniform braids
· ✅ Pattern Design – From classic cornrows to intricate styles
· ✅ Scalp Care – Ensuring client comfort and safety
· ✅ Speed & Efficiency – Building toward professional service delivery

Why Braiding Skills Matter
In Homa Bay’s fishing communities, women have historically faced limited economic options, with sex-for-fish emerging as a dangerous default survival mechanism. Professional braiding skills change this equation entirely. These techniques are:
· Highly marketable within local communities
· Portable – women can work from home, salons, or mobile
· Sustainable – ongoing demand for protective styling
· Dignified – earning respect through skilled craft
The Journey Continues
Each braid represents more than technical ability—it’s a thread in a new story of independence and hope. These women are not just learning to style hair; they’re building the foundation for small businesses, supporting their families, and breaking cycles of vulnerability.
