From Fabric to Freedom: 10 Trainees Stitch Their Way Out of Exploitation

In a small, sunlit room in Homa Bay, 10 women sit behind sewing machines. Around them: piles of colorful fabric, half-finished bags, and the quiet hum of ambition.

These are our Fashion and Design trainees. And they’re creating more than accessories, they’re creating alternatives.

What they’re making:

• Handmade bags (totes, clutches, shoulder bags)

• Fashion accessories (scarves, pouches, headwraps)

What they’re leaving behind:

• Sex-for-fish, a dangerous trade that still traps many women in our community

• Days of earning very little

• The feeling of having no choices

Every bag that leaves this studio carries a double meaning: beauty on the outside, and a quiet revolution inside.
